  • Description: Evaluated is the extent to which English is used as an international language of medical communication. A longitudinal analysis designed to show the development of English as a medium of biomedical literature in several countries was conducted on the basis of data from the Index Medicus MEDLINE. A brief sociolinguistic profile of the role of English among the Japanese medical professions is presented. Personal interviews & observations carried out in Japan indicate that English has a unique role as a vehicle or mediator of the "natural resources" of knowledge & information. Overall, the use of English in medicine worldwide is seen to be increasing. However, as is the case for technical jargon, the use of English may potentially inhibit doctor-patient communication in non-Eng-speaking environments. Some implications for the teaching of English include the need for development of programs sensitive to the sociolinguistic situations in particular countries. 4 Tables, 3 Figures, 21 References.
