Description:
As network managers try to cut costs by supporting facsimile traffic over backbone networks, more and more are finding that the voice compression techniques used by most T1 multiplexers can often slow down or destroy fax data. Fax machine and multiplexer vendors are introducing equipment that can help users avoid this problem. Stratacom Inc's IPX FastPacket multiplexer avoids the problem with a feature that lets the switch detect fax traffic by reading its header. The call is routed around the IPX module that performs adaptive differential pulse code modulation, which is what most T1 multiplexers use to compress the 64K-bps channel to 32K-bps or less. Network Equipment Technologies Inc's Integrated Digital Network Exchange (IDNX) T1 multiplexers make it possible to configure fax traffic as virtual calls. Products may soon be available that allow communications managers to detect a Group III analog fax signal, convert it to a 9.6K-bps digital signal for transmission through the network, then convert it back to an analog signal before it reaches the remote fax machine.
