  • Description: To the Editor: The letter by Miyai et al. in the July 24 issue reporting an association of HLA-Aw24 with congenital hypothyroidism in Japan is important, since only hemochromatosis has an established primary association with an A antigen, 1 and since the 21-hydroxylase-deficiency type of congenital adrenal hyperplasia is the only established non-autoimmune endocrinopathy to have an HLA-linked gene.2 We therefore studied 20 white patients, two black patients, and one Asian Indian patient with congenital hypothyroidism, as well as 200 white normal control subjects from the north central Florida region. [...]we have been unable to document any noteworthy disturbance in HLA-A frequencies in white Americans with congenital hypothyroidism.
