  • Description: The Punic presence in Moknine and Smirat is attested exclusively by funerary remains. Rescue excavations between 1987 and 2001 led to the recovery of 38 ceramic vessels in two hypogeum tombs at Moknine and three at Smirat. The tombs recorded at Moknine date from the end of the 4th to the beginning of the 3rd century BC, while the chronology of the hypogea at Smirat is the 3rd century BC. This research complements two previous studies concerning the Punic necropolises at these two cities. The interest of this work lies in the confirmation of previous observations on the funerary world: at Moknine this relates to the geographical dispersion of the funerary spaces and at Smirat the affirmation of the frequency of handmade pottery. The study of these ceramic vessels enriches the record of the Punic presence in this micro-region of the Sahel.
