Description:
Whether they are ribbed, hammered, prismatic or silvered, the glass pavers used in the composition of translucent concrete provide an architectural solution to the quest for light in the thickness of the buildings. This process, which consists in building monolithic forms by amalgamating reinforced concrete beams with glass modules, produces endless mosaics, domes and colourful, transparent canopies that adorn hospitality spaces in the lycées (France’s high schools). The representation of these places was conceived by the master builders with a concern for harmony and aestheticism arising from the stylistic influences of the moment. The painters decorating the halls with large shimmering frescoes finished giving perspective and depth to the translucent concrete, while the sculptures inlayed the grooves of the cement and the shards of the glass with low and high reliefs. This architectural heritage became widespread during the inter-war and reconstruction periods, especially during the “grands chantiers”, major projects launched by the Ministry of Instructions for the lycées and collèges (French high schools and middle school). Nowadays, the prevalence of this material in the architectural landscape of the lycées raises the question of its location and its enhancement by the heritage protection authorities. These challenges need, through popularisation of its restoration techniques, to reconsider its historical vocation.
