Description: From the 1820s on they appropriated the granite emerging from the quarries at Quincy to produce such large neoclassical landmarks as St. Paul's Cathedral, the branch Bank of the United States, Tremont House, U. S. Custom House, and other imposing works.2 With at least two exceptions, Shaw's realized buildings merged with those of a group of now less remembered names, including John Kutts,3 Cornelius Coolidge,4 Charles (C. G.) Hall,3 and William Sparrell.6 None of them is now thought of as having created memorable, monumental works. According to Silloway, who emphasized that he had known Shaw personally, "Mr. Shaw was a pupil of Mr. Banner, and later took up Mr. Banner's practice."'' Also, according to the same source, Shaw had in his possession an original drawing of the Park Street Church, Banner's major work of 1809.
