  • Description: Based on the sheet CD position information, as well as the shrinkage profile, the measurement scanner system aligns the CD profile zones against the headbox actuators. The PM 4 headbox has 74 actuators. The edge-tracking system provides the measurement system with accurate and continuous sheet position information for both front and backside, including the total sheet width. This data is used by the quality-control system for calculating the actual width and the CD position of the web. That allows adjusting the weight profile based on the width prior to the edge cutter, even though the scanner is placed after it. At UPM-Kymmene, Jamsankoski, Finland, edge-tracking systems were installed on PM 3, winder 31 and on PM 5, winder 51. The objective of these edge-tracking systems was to minimize the trimmed width, particularly when the width of the parent roll and the desired width of the edge-trimmed roll were near to each other. For instance, when the width of the parent roll is 4,250 mm (167.3-in), and the desired width of the edge-trimmed roll is 4,190 mm (165.0-in.), the total width of the trimmed strips is 60 mm (2.3-in.). The ability to do such accurate edge trimming without line scan camera-based web edge-tracking technology is possible only when the paper web hasn't been oscillated during supercalendering, as well as during winding.
