  • Description: The Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), a branch of the US Department of Agriculture's Forest Service, is spearheading the development of new technologies to reuse millions of tons of wood waste collected every year but not recycled. FPL researchers are finding new uses for a variety of wood waste, including demolition wood, cardboard packaging, post-consumer newspaper, kenaf bast and core, jute, flax, and sisal, among others. American WoodStock Co. recently licensed an FPL-developed technology that combines post-consumer newsprint with molten plastic for use in interior automotive panels that are reportedly lighter and stronger and require less material than conventional interior polypropylene trim.
