  • Description: Religious people in the West confronted impulses bred by the social gospel and faced challenges of modernity, as did the rest of the nation. The period 1890 to 1945 had less to do with European–American religions rushing west to convert natives and to establish congregations and infrastructure than it did with building on foundations established earlier. Mormonism continued to play a prominent role in the West's religious history from 1890 through 1945. Between 1890 and 1945 Roman Catholicism in the West showed signs of both the persistence of the old colonial or imperial order, in which influence and a desire to civilize flowed from the East to the West, and of a new order, in which innovation in the West spread outward. Asians continued to immigrate to the West from 1890 through 1945, although federal law excluded the Chinese and prejudice discouraged the Japanese.
