Description:
In a flotation deinking plant, conventional solvent-based gravure inks are easily processed. However, because water-based gravure inks use acrylic binders similar to those in flexography, some papermakers are concerned that these new inks may be as troublesome as flexographic inks in a flotation step using calcium soaps of fatty acids as flotation collectors [1-4]. With or without sodium oleate addition, the brightness of the floated pulps was highest in a calcium-free environment. At first sight, these observations seem quite different from those made by [Dorris] and Nguyen [5] on the flotation of flexo inks in the absence of fibres. They have shown that flexo inks did not float at all under alkaline conditions at zero calcium concentration. Adding calcium chloride up to a concentration of 1000 mg/L (as Ca) to flexo ink dispersions promoted some aggregation of the pigments. Despite improvements in floatability of flexo inks with excess calcium ions, flotation rates were impractically low. Abstract: In flotation deinking plants, the presence of a relatively small proportion of wastepapers printed with water-based flexographic inks leads to a significant loss of brightness of the deinked pulp. With the main thrust to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) in gravure printing, future formulations of water-based rotogravure inks are likely to result in problems similar to those caused by flexo inks in flotation deinking plants. The floatability of the new water-based gravure inks was investigated in three different systems: gravure ink dispersions free of fibres, dispersions with fibres and printed papers. The results indicated that water-based gravure inks behave similarly to flexo inks during flotation. They are easily washed in soft water but are not easily floated with conventional calcium soaps of fatty acids.
