Description:
In their earliest years, they were often stored in homes that were lit by gaslights, which produced sulfurous gases that took their toll on paper and leather. Because historic artifacts give museum visitors an authentic encounter with the past, whenever possible curators and conservators try to repair them instead of replacing them with facsimiles. [...]she resewed the reordered book block using soft linen thread, and attached it to the original front cover, which she had stabilized with paper reinforcements. Because the original black paint was glossy rather than matte, she painted the new paper repairs with an emulsion of acrylic polymers and wax in isopropanol to give the paper a similar sheen. The other leaves of the book had been previously restored using Asian papers whose color did not match the original materials. Because this was visually distracting, those areas were re-covered with new Asian paper toned with acrylic paints to match the original black paint and brown paper.
