Description:
The annual dropout and migration statistics report of the District of Columbia public schools reflects the guidelines, definitions, and tracking procedures of the District schools. School year 1992-93 was the fourth year of implementation of this project in the D.C. public schools. In school year 1992-93 the total number of dropouts was 2,499, representing 8.24 percent of students at the secondary level. The overall out-migration rate (out-of-city transfers) was 2.81 percent. Both rates reflect a marginal increase in dropout and migration rates over the previous school year. Dropout rates increased slightly for African-American and Asian students and decreased slightly for Hispanic-American students. More males dropped out than females, and the largest proportion (24.81 percent) dropped out while enrolled in grade 10. More than one quarter of students enrolled in alternative schools dropped out, an actual decline from the previous year. A dropout rate of 34.6 percent is projected for the next 4 years for the present ninth-grade cohort. Six tables present dropout statistics. An appendix contains definitions, rates, and lists of schools by city area. (SLD)
