  • Description: The article brings results of a pilot study which served as an introduction into a wider international research project along the Slovene-Italian border, Slovene-Austrian border, & Slovene-Hungarian border. The project, which took place in the year 2004 in Nova Gorica (ES Milojka Strukelj) & Gorica (ES Ivan Trinko & ES Vittorio Locci), included children as well as their parents. The aims of the research project were the following: -- importance of command & use of languages on both sides of the border; subjective evaluation of language command-native, neighboring & foreign language; socially & historically conditioned attitude towards language & its role in regulation of relations between communities; the so called "expansionism" of Italian & Slovene language in the border area; stimulation of multilingual communication; the differences between Slovenian & Italian side regarding communication; orientation of the Slovene minority with respect to the present communication situation. The research study indicated the parameters on the basis of which it is possible to estimate perception of cultural & linguistic diversity in the two border towns. It also showed to what degree the presence of minority & vicinity of border affects acceptance & evaluation of self & others. Tables, References. Adapted from the source document.
