The fundamental problem in psychology as a scientific discipline is that of measurement. How can we access (and assess) what people are feeling and thinking? The most commonsensible answer to this question is, of course, toaskthem. We ask people questions and make inferences about their mental states from their verbal responses, either spoken or written.
