  • Description: Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) players Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson are known throughout queer communities, not only for their athletic achievements on the court but also for championing their queer relationship off the court in an athletic culture that is not typically supportive of queer relationships. According to their Instagram feeds, they were a couple very much in love and were engaged to be married; however, in April of 2015, Griner and Johnson were arrested at a Phoenix-area home for suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct. This event gained some national traction on the news; however, when compared to Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens football team and his domestic violence trial, the Griner-Johnson incident (a queer relationship) did not receive nearly as much attention. The entirety of this event, ranging from the minimal national coverage of the WNBA players' arrests to the quick succession of media outlets to newer stories, reveals a reluctance to speak about queer-spectrum sexual violence because of fear of the unknown and lack of knowledge.
