Washington June 26. 1848 Dear Brother Davis Mr John A Rockwell of Ct has just handed me the letter which is herewith enclosed; which it seems has been in his hands for some time, it having been sent to him, instead of to me. Col Wentworth has had some conversation with me. I judge that a Judge Moore in your County is making opposition to Wentworth’s re-election. He would like to know what the prospect is, and what course the Whigs in that County will take in regard to the Congressional election. It would gratify him, I have no doubt, if you would write me immediately upon this point. Please to consider this as confidential. If you choose to reply, perhaps you may as well write in such a way that I can read the paragraph to him. Of course it is not a matter of great interest to me, except as I am willing to accommodate him, as he is not the worst loco foco in Congress - Washington DC June 26 1848 (AL 1) JR-DD Page 2 of 2 Not for publication, reproduction, sale, or release to other persons or institutions without the express written permission of the archive which holds the original document and of the David Davis Mansion Foundation. I intended before this to have answered your letter. I was home three weeks in May – saw much of your wife & son, and hope the residence of the present year at the East may entirely restore her health. I hope for another boy in August. Lucy is pretty well, but I fear suffers somewhat as she usually does before being confined. I am too much in haste, this hot morning to write much. We must support Taylor in Masstts but we have disaster before us there I fear. The nomination cuts us more severely, than any state in the Union. Since the Van Buren nomination, the locos here are not pleasant. Yours very truly in great haste J.
