  • Description: ABSTRACT In this paper, some of the most common sustainability challenges in developing countries are explored. The case of Thailand, a Southeast Asian country, is taken as a representative example with a particular emphasis on the importance of the self-sufficiency economy philosophy as a central platform for the development of sustainable public policies. It also discusses some of the challenges that have been faced in the Kingdom of Thailand in relation to foreign development philosophies and their pernicious effects on the consumption habits of the population and on the order of priorities from the point of view of preferences on public policy projects. Examples are given from the field of public education. The main conclusion of the study is that, although sustainability is a global problem, solutions must be local and collective. In other words, individual freedom should not take precedence over the needs and priorities of the collective.
