Description: Nevertheless, the most common cause is atherosclerotic coronary artery disease with erosion or rupture of atherosclerotic plaque, exposing the highly procoagulant contents of the atheroma core to circulating platelets and coagulation proteins, and culminating in formation of intracoronary thrombus (6-8). During the course of management after the diagnosis of acute MI is ascertained, serial measurements of biomarkers of myocardial necrosis are useful in demonstrating the characteristic rise and/or fall that aids in confirming the diagnosis of MI, providing qualitative information with respect to infarct size and surveying for ongoing or recurrent myocardial ischemia causing reinfarction.
