  • Description: [...]diptychs were still in use during the latter part of the Roman period from the fifth to the tenth century, and ancient Roman diptych covers have been used in covering new books. [...]ancient Pagan modes of treatment came to be applied to Christian books, and we find old ivory covers, in spite of the heathenish and mythological scenes of they bear representations, used upon religious manuscripts and books in the earlier Christian times. The Arabs were great masters of the art as early as the eleventh century and their beautiful Koran bindings of this period served as the original patterns for the ornamental Koran bindings the fifteenth sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which often cost several hundred dollars. Besides the above mentioned monastic bindings in leather the wooden bindings of some books were covered with parchment, velvet ,silk or other expensive material. [...]the clasps and studs were made smaller and even began to be dispensed with altogether although they occasionally appeared through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries when even these ornaments went out use.
