Description: Handsheets of various commercial and experimental papermaking pulps were ovendried in special drying frames that controlled the amount of shrinkage. Unstretched handsheets and those stretched predetermined amounts were dried with various allowances for shrinkage and tested in tension to determine the influence of restraint during drying on the strength, modulus of elasticity, and strain to failure. The results show that modulus of elasticity is independent of the type of pulp but increases with the degree of restraint during drying, and with the density of the handsheets. Modulus of elasticity in the direction of restraint was found to vary as the cube of density. Tensile strength and strain to failure, on the other hand, were dependent on the type of pulp, as well as on the degree of restraint and density of handsheets. Tensile strength increased with the degree of restraint and appeared to vary as a power function with density changes. Strain to failure decreased as degree of restraint increased; it increased, however, with increasing density. (Author)
