  • Description: The use of polycrystalline materials in photovoltaic solar cells is being extensively investigated to determine if these substances will serve as adequate replacements for high, Quality, single-crystal technologies, currently employed in solar energy experiments. Difficulties in adapting polycrystalline materials center on the formation of a well-defined P-N junction, which is complicated because of preferential adsorption of dopants at grain boundaries. Replacement of the P-N junction with a Schottky barrier may be a step toward solving the problem. A recent development in Schottky barrier cells is the semiconductor-electrolyte liquid junction in which the usual metallic contact is replaced by a suitable electrolyte solution.
