  • Description: Despite heavy exploration since 1965 and the consequent find of some 42 1012 Cu FT of gas reserves in the North Sea basin, discoveries continue in the Permian rotliegendes sandstone. Ultimate oil reserves seem to be 39 109 bbl. The North Sea, with established reserves of more than 15 109 bbl of petroleum liquids and about 30 109 potential bbl would seem to rank well with the rest of the world, except the Middle East. With good husbandry and no increased requirements, U.K. reserves, including possible developments on the Western shores, will be substantially depleted by the year 2000.
