Description:
In Western Australia, Perth has an infrastructure better than many UK or US cities. The city has a population of just 1.2 million and 3 universities with a quality high enough to attract students from Asian countries with much larger populations. Given its position as the nearest land mass to Asia with a European culture, Australia offers both the virtues and vices associated by Asia with European culture. Perth serves as an island of political freedom and expression for people from some parts of Asia. Australia is also popular with Asians as an education center, being both cheaper and nearer than the UK or the US. Asians also tend to think of Australian medicine positively and many come here for physical check-ups, taking advantage of the relatively low costs. Australia now exports mostly raw materials, such as wool and iron ore to China, and imports manufactured goods from China, much as it once did with the UK. However, wage levels in Australia are low compared with those prevailing in East Asia. Its infrastructure and educational levels are so good that there may well come a time when Australia will become competitive in some industries.
