Description:
1460399 Non-woven fabrics JOHNSON & JOHNSON 6 Jan 1975 [7 Jan 1974] 399/75 Heading D1R A fluffy batt of wood pulp fibres having uniformly distributed throughout the thickness of the batt a binder comprising 2 to 100% by weight of the fibres formed by in situ reaction between a plurality of components has a thickness of 1 to 100 mm and a density of 0.01 to 0.1 g/cc. The bonded batt is formed as indicated in Fig. 1. In example 1 a toluene solution of an epoxy resin is sprayed on one side of the wood pulp board and a hardener is sprayed on the other side. The board is ground in a hammer mill and the fibres air laid onto a permeable screen. The resin hardens at room temperature. In example 2 calcium chloride and sodium silicate are sprayed as aqueous solutions, the board dried and ground and the batt exposed to steam to form a calcium silicate cement. In example 3 the components are a polyester resin and a methyl ethyl ketone peroxide catalyst. In example 4 the components are adipic acid-diethylene glycol polyester and toluene diisocyanate. The batt is heated in the presence of moisture to form a foamed polyurethane. Each component penetrates up to 30% of the thickness of the board and may be knife-coated on. The hammer mill may be replaced by a Bauer mill, a Fitz mill or a pair of counter-rotating rolls. The batt may be laminated with a thermoplastic film to form a disposable diaper. A paper or non woven fabric sheet may be applied to the other side of the batt.
