  • Description: Development of Triploid Populus Tomentosa Carr. Chinese white poplar (Populus tomentosa) is a popular hardwood species in the Northern China. Triploid populus tomentosa carr., bred by Beijing Forestry University, is a cloned poplar. It comprises 57 clones, compared to 38 clones for natural white poplar. Triploid populus tomentosa carr. has the same biological behaviour as natural poplar. However, compared to the natural poplar, triploid populus tomentosa carr. displays the unique characteristic of a fast-growing rate. It was reported [6] that the diameter and volume of five-yearold tree are around 20 cm and 0.1-0.2 nr respectively and each hectare of five-year-old triploid populus tomentosa carr. can provide between 150 and 300 nr of pulpwood. In Shanxi province, the average volume of each hectare of a five-year-old triploid populus tomentosa carr. reaches 225-300 m^sup 3^ [7]. As a result, the annual growing volume is 3060 m per hectare, compared to a 12-15 m^sup 3^ annual growing volume per hectare for eucalyptus, which are planted in southern China [6,8]. The average fibre length, fibre aspect ratio and Runkel Ratio are important parameters for papermaking purpose. High average fibre length and aspect ratio and low Runkel Ratio result in good pulp strength properties. As Table II shows, for a five-year-old triploid populus tomentosa carr., the average fibre length is 1.09 mm, which is 0.28 mm longer than that of sixyear-old eucalyptus. For a nine-year-old wood species, the average fibre length of triploid populus tomentosa carr. is 0.23 mm longer than natural poplar. The [Runkel] ratio of the triploid populus tomentosa carr. is evidently much lower than that of eucalyptus and natural poplar. Triploid populus tomentosa carr. has been studied for both chemical pulping (kraft and soda-AQ) and mechanical pulping (APMP and BCTMP process). The results show that the pulping yield and strength properties of chemical pulp from triploid populus tomentosa carr. are better than those from natural aspen and eucalyptus. Laboratory results show that the triploid populus tomentosa carr. responded well to the APMP process, which leads to the production of highquality mechanical pulp. Triploid populus tomentosa carr. is equally suitable for the conventional BCTMP process; and a very high brightness (80% ISO) can be readily reached in a single-stage or two-stage peroxide process at a H^sub 2^O^sub 2^ charge of 4.0%.
