Description:
This study analyzed informal Finnish compositions written by the first pupils in Vaasa (Finland) who were taught Swedish by immersion method and the compositions of their parallel class. Compositions in the fourth and fifth forms were compared. The immersion pupils were taught mostly in Swedish, while their peers in the parallel group were taught in Finnish. Pupils in the parallel group wrote tests that were longer, more clearly divided, and had fewer spelling errors. The immersion pupils had problems with double consonants, and to some extent, with long vowels. At the same time, the immersion pupils were able to write more compound words correctly. In sentence structure, the immersion pupils favor auxiliary clauses while those in the parallel groups use more various inlaid structures and attributes. Therefore, the immersion pupils write sentences with more words than their parallels. As the immersion pupils speak in the fifth form more Finnish at school than before, the difference in the length of the texts has become smaller between the groups and the immersion pupils make fewer spelling errors. No clear influence of the Swedish language on the immersion pupils first language can be discerned. (Author/VWL)
