Entlang von Streiflichtern auf die Geschichte der Erwachsenenbildung versucht der Autor den roten Faden der Erwachsenenbildung als einen Prozess des Gebens und Nehmens und damit als ein Teil-Nehmen und Teil-Geben aufzugreifen. Dabei fällt sein Blick auch auf die jüngsten Entwicklungen: viel Individualismus, aber wenig Gemeinschaftsgefühl, viel Bereicherung, aber wenig Gemeinwohl, viel Egozentrik, aber wenig Gemeinsamkeit. Den Abschluss bildet die mahnende Frage: Vielleicht sollten wir, wenn uns die Teilnehmenden wirklich wichtig sind, noch mehr mit ihnen diskutieren, sprechen, erörtern, beraten, was sie bewegt, wenn es darum geht: teilnehmen - teilgeben!? Casting a spotlight on the history of adult education, the author attempts to pick up the common thread of adult education as a process of giving and taking and thus taking part and sharing. He focuses on the latest developments: a lot of individualism but little sense of community, a lot of enrichment but little common good, a lot of egocentrism but little common ground. In the conclusion, he raises the following question as a warning: If the participants are truly important to us, perhaps we should discuss, speak and debate with them and counsel them when the subject is: taking part - sharing?
