  • Description: In 40 years of rule, the Communist Party has presided over a rapidly growing Vietnamese economy since market-oriented reforms in the late 1980s, yet social liberalization was not part of the package. Censorship of cultural and political dissent is still enforced by stringent laws. State-owned museums contend with government restrictions and limited funding. The independent initiatives in Ho Chi Minh City are ZeroStation, steered by artist-curator Nguyen Nhu Huy, and Dia Projects, run by artist Richard Streitmatter-Tran, which in May launched a new exhibition space in Dong Khoi Street. Ho Chi Minh City's primary commercial space Galerie Quynh hosted "Khoi Song" (9/25-10/31) with new abstract paintings by Ha Manh Thang, and "1972-2015" (11/19-12/19), addressing issues of displacement with works by Hoang Duong Cam and Trong Gia Nguyen.
