  • Description: 8184. Porter, M. D. April 5. Fibrous plastic compositions.-A plastic material, suitable for making hollow-ware such as pails, buckets, bottles, cans, or boxes, consists of wood pulp, an insoluble silicate, casein, a precipitated insoluble resinate, and a preservative. In an example, 100 lb. of dry wood pulp are mixed with 200 lb. of talc powder, water is added to bring the mass to a creamy consistency, and 10 lb. of sodium resinate and 5 lb. of casein are mixed therewith. Finally 5 lb. of a metallic salt, such as aluminium sulphate, capable of reacting with the sodium resinate to form an insoluble resinate, are added. Any superfluous water is removed by straining, and the material is then moulded and dried at 140‹ C.
