Description:
This work analyses the location patterns of logistic activities in French Urban Areas between 1985 and 2009, using building permits data. It provides new empirical evidence to the debate on the suburbanization of logistics, through an analysis of the evolution of its spatial patterns. This study shows that suburbanization takes place not only in largest metropolitan areas (where city centers are the most congested) but also in medium-sized and small urban areas. Although it affects most of urban areas, the suburbanization of logistics takes different forms during the different periods under study. In the first period logistic activities spread over a large number of suburban locations. In the second period logistics tend to concentrate in a few suburban locations. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of recent academic works about the importance of agglomeration economies in the field of logistics. Adapted from the source document.
