  • Description: To be fair, the lawsuit was filed in 2014, but the Trump administration has taken a special interest in the case, with the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division deciding last year to investigate a single complaint involving Asian American students in a college admissions affirmative action case.Experts argue that, at selective colleges, Asians are demographically overrepresented minorities but they are underrepresented relative to the applicant pool.Since the 1990s, the number of Asians in Harvard's freshman class has remained steady, between 16 and 19 percent, while the percentage of Asians in the U.S. has more than doubled, says Jeannie Suk Gersen, a professor at Harvard Law School, adding that a Princeton University study shows that Asians had to score 140 points higher on the SAT than Whites to have the same chance of admission to top universities.Last year, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the University of Texas at Austin's affirmative action program, which, like Harvard, aims to build a diverse class among multiple dimensions and considers race as one factor in a holistic review of each applicant.
