  • Description: Sheridan and colleagues' data suggest that consanguineous marriage remains popular in many local, non-European groups--eg, 1922 (37%) of 5127 babies born had first cousin parentage and 1116 (22%) of 5127 babies born had other blood parentage in the large Pakistani community--less than the 55·0% first cousin marriage and 15·0% of marriages between more distantly related couples reported in a previous Bradford study3 and the overall consanguinity prevalence of 69·1% in the Birmingham Pakistani community in a study done in the late 1980s.4 Direct comparison of the three studies is difficult because of the different reporting methods used in each and the ongoing effect of transnational marriages.5 Nonetheless, the data suggest a fall in the frequency of consanguineous unions in the UK Pakistani community, especially between first cousins--a pattern already noted in the much smaller Norwegian Pakistani population.6 Sheridan and colleagues report that consanguinity (ie, first cousin union) was associated with a doubling of risk for congenital anomalies (multivariate risk ratio [RR] 2·19, 95% CI 1·67-2·85).
