Description: By summer 1991, nearly 80 printing-writing paper mills in the US and Canada had partially or completely converted to alkaline papermaking with another 21 mills planning for conversion. Both natural ground calcium carbonate and precipitated calcium carbonate have made significant gains against clay as filler in the uncoated woodfree grades. The primary market for Wilkinson Mineral's air-float clays is in woodfree grades, and president Eugene Herman sees the substantial decline of the past 3 years continuing for the next 5 to 10 years. One supplier representative observed that there are strong, positive trends in both wet end cationic-amphoteric starches and specialty size press starches. The conversion to alkaline papermaking has had a negative impact on the aluminum sulfate market. According to Rob Quarles of Hercules' Paper Technology Group, the market for defoamers is approximately $120 million, with a projected annual growth rate of 5% to 7%.
