  • Description: In this article Chinese immigration in the Province of Tarapaca is analyzed, using quantitative evolution, demographic characteristics, and their economic and social insertion. It is postulated that the Asiatic presence during the Peruvian period was determined by their role as inferiors. However, during the period of Chilean administration there was greater social and economic mobility. In this context, Chinese immigration in the province of Tarapaca can be divided into two phases. The first was when the Chinese were brought in to work in the guano deposits and the second, from 1880 onwards, closely linked to those Chinese, mainly from Canton, who arrived in Iquique and Pisagua, freely and spontaneously, attracted by the labour possibilities available in those ports and the nitrate offices.
