  • Description: The fifth chapter takes the idea of survival forward, discussing the gradual deterioration of early-modern books, and interestingly, the environmental impact of the effort to manage and slow their decay in present-day special collections libraries. Calhoun reaps the benefits of wide reading, not just in book history but also in publications for papermakers and conservators; he has also, laudably, interviewed some present-day papermakers and had a go at some reconstructed papermaking processes. The current pandemic postdates Calhoun's writing process but has driven home how much work on the physical book has relied on air travel, how small a proportion ofpremodern books are available in digital facsimile, and how insufficient digital facsimiles are.
