  • Description: ABSTRACT The paper approaches the study of José Martí writings from the perspective of university students needs. It’s aimed objective is to advance a proposition or reading selections in connection to Cuban History syllabus. The professional model and Cuban History syllabus were studied to figure out social demands related to the knowledge of history and José Martí writings; a survey was given to a sample of first year students to diagnose their knowledge of Martí’s writings and the relation and how they relate them to national history. The selection “Martí en la Universidad” and the “cuadernos martianos I, II y III” were studied to evaluate the potentials of the texts included as documents projecting or describing historical events. Two main findings are described. First the selection of texts associated to particular syllabus topics, and second, a selection of texts read in prior levels of educations deserving a second reading from the perspective of the university context and by intellectual matured students.
