Description:
A presentation during La Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs ·es “Topsy-turvy” 2024https://www.bretagne-pays-de-la-loire.cnrs.fr/fr/evenement/la-nuit-blanche-des-chercheurs-sens-dessus-dessus-2024"Objective 2050: Nantes as you can't imagineFar from the flying cars dreamed of in the last century, what will our city look like in 30 years? If you're worried about urban life in the future, don't worry, the researchers are on the case! Using artificial intelligence, imagine and build Nantes in 2050. Let yourself be transported to the city of tomorrow, take in the sights and discover a future in the city that is more shimmering and reassuring than it seems. Nantes 2050 is an attempt to break the urban normality and imagine how the city and its inhabitants would react should they undergo such radical shift in modality. In the scope of the project we consider 3 distinct stages of such change: the catastrophe, the adaptation and the overcoming. By accolading that the transition period is equally crucial as the eventual solution, we let the narrative take its course and arrive at the conclusion gradually.A use of various narrative techniques, including AI, helps us visualize and bring those scenarios to life.As a pert of a Nuit Blanche public event, an experimental short film was produced, depicting a scenario where the City of Nantes faces a series of environmental and economic cataclysms. From radical temperature rise to floods, overpopulation and natural elements growing out of control. While dystopian and utopian notions can be equally paralyzing, the experiment aims to explore the change in established urban and social behaviors that would have to shift in case of such a large scale unplanned event. Ultimately, we ask, what is the future of the cities? From habitats to transportation, to commerce and public spaces. Through series of fictional depictions, we try to imagine the possible trajectory of these events.
