Description: As of March 2010, illness caused by the 2009 H1N1 virus had occurred in almost all countries, with more than 16,000 deaths from laboratory-confirmed cases reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). The United States saw an estimated 59 million pandemic H1N1 illnesses, 265,000 hospitalizations, and 12,000 deaths. This review by WHO experts summarizes the virologic, epidemiologic, and clinical data on the 2009 H1N1 virus and assesses future directions.
