  • Description: This report was developed as part of a Swedish study to examine whether videotelephones can be used to develop the communicative ability of individuals with mental retardation and whether access to telecommunications increased the possibilities of social integration. Communication was viewed as sharing a feeling, action, or experience with another person. This part of the study focused on designing an assessment form for assessing the communicative competence of individuals with moderate mental retardation and testing of the form by 10 speech pathologists working with adults with mental retardation. Results showed that the form functions effectively only if several persons who know the disabled person well participate in the assessment procedure and combine this with information from the participant him/herself.
