  • Description: This essay examines whether the post-Wall renovation of Berlin's Hackescher Markt district, which encompasses the old Jewish quarter, has resulted in a sanitised heritage site or whether the urban space has been transformed into an authentic public place. To determine whether the latter has occurred, I first analyse how well the new and renovated architecture adapts Berlin's architectural and urban spatial traditions. Second, I investigate whether any place-making activities occur, and if so whether they materialise cultural memories for their use in the present. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
