I do not deny that there is an abstract attachment, often expressed in terms of justice, to the fault system. As I said earlier, systems no less than acts come to carry moral connotations, and these remain long after the reasons for the connotations are gone. This has undoubtedly happened with the fault system and serves to explain why the same individuals who are quite happy to allocate losses on a nonfault basis in individual cases can profess loyalty to the fault system in the abstract.
