  • Description: Graphic Packaging chairman and president/CEO David Scheible took over what he called a "functionally" bankrupt company eight years ago, turned it on its operational ear with simple, persistent change, and now envisions expanding the more than $4 billion firm into one that could reach $7 billion in annual sales. Scheible's execution at Graphic Packaging was the main factor cited by analysts for selecting him this month as RISI's 2015 North American CEO of the Year. In 2007 Graphic Packaging generated $2.4 billion in revenue owed $1.87 billion in long-term debt, and relegated cash generation mainly to pay off debt. Today the firm generated 75% more revenue than it did when Scheible became CEO with only a small increase in debt and completed eight acquisitions in the company's core packaging business. Considered risky by some, the Altivity acquisition in 2008 was, according to Scheible, the one to put them in the best position to succeed.
