  • Description: The sensitivity of the adolescent to different registers, the level of language influence, & the social functions of adolescent language as an indication of attitudes, group solidarity, & value systems are investigated & discussed with reference to Hans du Plessis's novel for adolescents, disse flippen stukkende wereld die, my ou (Pretoria, South Africa: HAUM Literer, 1991). A general discussion of processes of identification with peer groups & differentiation from nonpeers that can be found in the language of adolescent boys & girls is followed with an analysis of Du Plessis's novel as a work in the idiom & register of Afrikaans-speaking teenagers. The idiomatic title, onomastic aspects, linguistic markers (ie, phonological varieties, syntactical levels of complexity, & modality markers), sociolinguistic markers (ie, adult communication characteristics, politeness, forms of address & reference, & greeting formulas), & sociolinguistic registers (ie, slang, expletives, & dialectic variations) are discussed. It is concluded that disse flippen stukkende wereld die, my ou is an excellent example of the changes in value systems & hence the language usage of Afrikaans-speaking adolescents. 57 References.
