  • Description: Humorous nicknames used by South African teenagers are examined as examples of linguistic humor within social contexts. A 1995 survey provides 103 humorous nicknames. Analysis indicates that males are more often carriers of humorous nicknames than females & that speakers of African languages use humorous nicknames more often than do speakers of Afrikaans. Internal (eg, phonetic & semantic) & external (eg, context-related) aspects of humorous nicknames are described, as are their pragmatic uses. A discussion of socio-onomastic properties of humorous nicknames emphasizes confirmation or criticism of hierarchic linguistic & social relationships. 2 Tables, 32 References.
