  • Description: This chapter has two purposes. In Part I, we define more precisely what we mean by the globalization of higher education. We examine whether or not there are intensifying international flows of students and academic personnel in the present period, and whether or not higher educational institutions or practices are becoming more uniform throughout the world. These investigations allow us to engage in more specific regional comparisons as well as to consider more precisely the role of the West and the United States in particular, in this globalization process. In Part II, we demonstrate that the GCC region’s universities and colleges have become unusually extraverted and that American and Commonwealth higher education institutions are important drivers of this educational opening to the West. We conclude by explaining why the GCC has placed so much emphasis on Western-oriented educational reform.
